John Clark, Jr.
Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering
Research Interests: Electrophysiology (neural, cardiac); mathematical modeling of biological systems; signal processing methods applied to biological systems; nonlinear system dynamics; electromagnetic field theory.
Professor John Clark has participated in the field of bioengineering for more than 30 years. His research involves the application of mathematical and engineering techniques to the fields of neuroscience and cardipulmonary systems.
Current research interests include the development of quantitative mathematical models of single neurons and cardiac cells, and their utilization in multicellular networks (e.g. ring-type locomotion networks, cardiac reflexes such as the baroreflex and neural circuits for the control of respiration).
Projects involving medical devices and instrumentation are also under way in the areas of cardiovascular system analysis and pulmonary function testing. Professor Clark is one of the leaders in bioengineering in the Houston area and was instrumental in forming the Houston Society for Engineering in Medicine and Biology, which has hosted the annual Houston Conference on Biomedical Engineering Research for the past 19 years.
Professor Clark is a Founding Fellow of the American Institute of Engineering in Medicine and Biology.

Research is centered on the area of Computational Biology and Medicine. Dr. Clark's Laboratory develops detailed mechanistic models of biological processes on several levels of scale: from molecular, cellular and tissue modeling to the development of interactive multiple-organ system models. Examples of cellular models include cardiac cell and neuron modeling with mechanistic ion channel descriptions and modulation via second messengers. At the multiple-organ level, development of large-scale models of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems, as they interact and are controlled by the central nervous system.
